I just recently had my 304 rebuilt...do the cam bearing holes need to be installed or oriented a certain way? These are just stock replacement bearings by the way. I'm asking because the front bearing hole appears to be half way showing oil groove in block.

There is a slot they meet up with so yes they need to be oriented the right way.

If you have the set with the dual hole the large hole goes up.

Single hole bearings...front bearing hole is toward passenger side if block, roughly 7-8 O clock.

It appears the rest of the bearings holes face 9 o clock, sound right? Maybe just the front will have to be replaced....

If bearing installed right put flashlight in cam journal and light should be seen in hole in main bearing web directly above it. easy check to see if holes align, block upside down

You can see from pics, that bearing hole isn't over a hole, it's halfway over groove in block. I just wish I could see a pic of a bare block.

I copied this from an article that MSD put out for proper oiling of cam gears. Aparently my front bearing isn't precisely installed.
1. When performing final engine assembly, the first critical point is the front camshaft bearing orientation. Placement of this bearing requires precise alignment of the bearings’ oil feed hole with the block’s oil gallery. This ensures maximum oil flow to the camshaft’s front journal groove. The groove must completely encircle the journal in order to ensure proper lubrication throughout the camshaft rotation.

I copied this from the AMC forum...
The cam bearings need to be installed so the holes in the shells line up with passenger side of the block to intersect the passages from the passenger lifter bore galley to the mains. There are no other oil feed holes in the block to supply oil to the cam bearings as designed and manufactured by AMC.

I knocked bearing out....maybe it was installed correctly?

The hole in the cam bearing should be centered over that slot. The slot is in the same place on all 5 bearing journals. Be sure you use the proper tool to re-install the bearing. If you knurl the edge, the cam may not go in, or you could have improper oil flow to the gear and chain.
