Uncle is pulling engine out today and is tearing it down for rebuild. He has owned many amc's and told me that he will do an oil mod "Even if you say no, Im not gonna ruin this engine because you dont know Squatt about amc's"
A buddy of mine came up with this setup and im wondering if its reliable. Rebuild the 360 to 9.9:1 compression, eddelbrock heads, eddelbrock RPM Airgap intake 750 eddelbrock carb hughes cam #HE2430 with 224/230 degrees @.050, .504/.515 lift. He swears it will have 397hp at 5,500 rpm and make 436 lbs of torque at 3400 rpm. Thinks it will cost around 1500$.
Almost 400hp sounds good but will the motor handle it?
would the AMC EFI 1000CFM from yall be overkill?
IS THIS THING OVERKILL???????
be brutal yall im DIVORCED

Unless you have all the parts on hand (bearings, heads, cam & lifters, carb, gaskets etc) Dream on! 111!!!

If you have the Intake and Carb that saves what?.... $450-$500
Headers =$150 (You can buy pre-made for that... (on ebay). Now you want the motor to be 9.9:1 or 10:1... Well, pistons alone will run you $600-$700ish
Cam and lifter set will run $200
Timing set = $80
Aftermarket Distributor = $200+ Unless you use the stock and do the MSD upgrades but it's still going to be pricey.
Purchasing the heads... or even having the machine work done to them is going to run you a little change.. Truing the block, cleaning or boring, checking the rods, crank etc... bearings, gaskets... etc etc..then you have to add the "O-Sh!t" factor(s) and the "What the F*cks!" or "You gotta be kidding me!"
I can see a cheap decent build in the range of $2200-$2600. and that's going through everything. But, you get what you pay for and in the end it's ultimately your bag of goodies.

Take anybodies estimate and add at LEAST 50%, if not double.
My 69 390 does about 450HP. It's bored .030, forged pistons (10.1:1), balanced, rods cleaned and shot peened, crank cut .010/.010. ARP head, rod, and main bolts and rocker studs. Heads have been ported, polished, and gasket matched. Stainless valves w/3 angle cut. Healthy cam, roller rockers, R4B intake with a Edelbrock 750 carb, Hooker Super Comp headers (ceramic coated). Ran just shy of $3000 just for parts, another $1200 machine work, and I did all the assembly. You're talking AMC parts here, not off-the-shelf Chevy or Ford mass produced parts.

Ummm....
This is about 4 bills worth
BEFORE the radiator, distrubutor, carb, intake, brakes, Dizzy, double roller timing set-up, pulley's, etc...
LARGER Pic
The 360 is bored and balanced, port smothed (not matched) and I supplied the internal parts (cam & bearings crank, etc) ... and completed heads were another $330
From oil burning, wore slap out, kitty litter in the cylinders - to 420 HP (on paper) is about 4 LARGE. Know what your getting into before the ol' lady gets pissed off

If You can afford the EFI go for it you will never be sorry..
and just my opinion the hp torque figures are low and the dollar figures are a bit low also.. but what the hell Go for it.. you will be surprised at the power and the cost!!

Block was bored .030", crank turned 10/10, 750 Holley, Torker Intake, CompCams Magnum K-Kit, CompCams Timing set, stud bosses milled/drilled and tapped, Harland Sharp 1.7:1 Roller rockers, positive seals, Scat Forged H-Beam Rods, Ross 10:1 Race pistons, block milled .008", heads shaved .014", 3 angle valve job, minor smoothing in the exhaust ports, gasket matched, Dynomax Headers, 3" purple hornies, clevite bearings, brass freeze plugs, moly rings, rol high temp head gaskets, Hi Flow water pump, DUI HEI with livewires, internally balanced, 7.5 qt oil pan, Flex-a-lite dual fans... and the list continues... I'm well over $5000 easy  And I'm getting rid of it...... The machining aspect got me a little... Kinda pricey around here, compared to home but, they did a really good job. This pig is definitely a thirsty one!!!
There's no doubt that building a chebby or small block ford is cheaper... AMC's are a thing of their own. :t:

There's a reason that 500hp+ engines sell for 8 grand and more in the magazines.
Getting hp can be cheap...keeping it together for any amount of time isn't. 400 hp from a 360, that's 1.1 hp per cubic inch.
Even a good bore and hone job will run $300, then there is the crank. Installing cam bearings yourself? There's another $40 to $60. At 400hp you better check the rods and re-size & true the big end. Machine work alone will run $1000 unless you do that yourself also.
Then there is the factor of proving the hp...something "dyno time" proves...otherwise its just talk. I'm always amazed at the HP levels of engines people have...and they haven't seen a dyno in their lives. #-o
You said be brutal...

Ruff guess $150 per total hp on anything over 1hp per cubic inch...if its done right. There's a reason bigger is better.
Not trying to discourage you or piss someone off, but I just can't see how for $1500.

I think we all agree that it's next to impossible.... Just for a stock rebuild with everything major within check is going to push the $1500 to the max...

I got a mild rebuild of a 304 without boring and keeping the stock pistons, with just a dizzy, cam, intake, and carb im over a grand in parts, no machine work and I did the assembly myself

I'm not sure I'd call that mild.... I mean no disrespect... to one there own though. What are the specs of that cam? The Pistons, rods, and heads are what getcha... and then the machine work comes like mentioned above in the other reply.
ironman_gq
cam is an engle .466 intake, .482 exhaust, 248/260 duration 207/216 @.050 and 112 centerline. Performer intake/carb. HEI dizzy.
this is a new cam and intake I had a clevite performer(very similar to edelbrock in spec) with iron 4bbl intake before and just wasnt quite happy enough with it. my excuse is that I had to make sure the bolts werent getting too tight
ironman_gq
Desktop Dyno says the numbers are close but I dont have all the cam specs so I had to guess on some. but desktop only gets you in the ballpark for numbers on power and torque.

WElllllll........ after over 3 LARGE in machine work and "I bought" parts (total closer to 4.6K in the engine) Desk Top" puts me near 420HP.. Doing that on 1.5K? I SERIOUSLY doubt it.
Yeah HP is brutal when done right. Jeff can jump in with what Dynos have to say, and I might as well (to the rear wheels) when I can get there and not tell the wife the cost
When was the last time someone made 21" 'guns' without working out? Ain't gunna happen. sorry.
ironman_gq
21" id be happy with 16!!! It takes a lot of work just to get 15's!!

It's all about Genetics... My uncle (5'11" 290lbs) is a true Scottish Lumber Jack... Huge Wide/Thick Shoulders, Barrel Chest, Quads like tree trunks, hands like a bear, massive popeye forearms and 21" Arms, The kicker is he doesn't workout.. Genetically blessed in that sense. I don't workout and I stand 5' 9" 184lbs with 16 1/2" arms... No fat. Genetics are 90% of it. (I'm the runt of the family too!)

I got your Runt.... 8) hehehe. It's like I said in the other post, once I get some "my" time (away from the boat/work etc) and build my Jeep Nest egg back to a comfortable money dump level (It's low so it's not going to take long) What all is left that's worth a $h!t?
You said you have a Gold 4-door Dodge 2500? Do you have a goatee? I think I might have seen ya if that's the case... I was getting into the Jeep... I wasn't sure if it was you or not and it was 4-ish..... 30 minutes past beer thirty :? I'll be underway for a month so.. I should have some green... Plus I'm getting back $6000+ and I might have a taker on the Jeep for $5500... (Won't know for sure until I get back)... I'll be sad to see it go but the green for the 360 stroker will be sweet. :!:

NEGIT on the Goat - I was one once  , but that was a long time ago, so it was probably Gary who also works in the BLDG.
I'll be watching your schedule mate
I pick up the Waggy tomorrow and have surgery on Friday. Spousal unit wants a lot of this stuff GONE!! Good new is I can trade a lot of the stuff I have (legacy) for the Wag, that may include an old hard top that NEEDS work =D>
