Strange as it my sound my heads seem to be squeaking. Running Edelbrock Aluminum heads, Scorpion 1.6 roller rockers with Edelbrock hardened push rods with the Bulltear AMC Aluminum rocker covers on a 401.
I'm getting a very obvious kind of strange squeak / rubbing sound coming from high up on the engine, not my belts or pumps, I disconnected all the belts to verify. I know the push rods are hitting one side of the guide plates harder on some cylinders than others. Edelbrock says that's OK? My comfort level with the guide plate rubbing is minor and it's understandable as to why they rub but i would think it should only be an occasional or slight rub that I shouldn't hear. My thoughts are perhaps the roller on the rocker is not parallel to the rocker pivot pushing it, making the rocker drive harder to one side, other than looking at the wear pattern on the roller portion of the rocker that is pretty tough to check. I also thought the side of the roller itself could be galling on the aluminum part of the rocker body, i did notice very slight wear there not enough to make as loud of a noise as it is making. I have noticed a slight color change in the oil but did not notice anything sticking to my magnet.
Being the head bolts are pretty tight to the bolt holes in the head i neglected to not put the locating pins on the head. I think that shifted the head slightly to one side, that may be part of the reason the push rods rub on one side. I put a pair of OEM rockers on one of the cylinders to see if it made any sound difference, it didn't or i didn't think it did. I am tempted to open up the guide plate by .02 and see if it goes away. Some people though it may be coming from the piston, like a skirt rubbing or the wrist pin, it just sounds way to high up for that. Unplugged one of the cylinders wires when it was running to see if that made a difference, it did make a slight differences, very slight almost like under a load, not under a load kind of difference.
Has anyone ever experienced this kind of noise or have any thoughts, Iv'e had this machine apart a few times now and I'm very open to any suggestions or thoughts..
don't want to put it back together just to take it apart again.
