Old Rugged Crosser
Fuzz, what are you using for a trans. I take it that you use your rig for both racing and off road. What mods did you make to your trans. I especially am curious if you are using a TH400. I am getting ready to rebuild my TH400 and would like to get your opinion as to mods to make for both usages. Please try to be explicit in your answers, so I can learn from your experience. :sa:

Go the TH400 and never look back.
I did the 34 element intermediate Sprag, Transgo 1-2 kit, Alto 6 clutch Direct and Forward drums,Alto Intermediate Clutches.
I have heard Raybestos 4L80 clutches are the shniznit too
I should have upped the stall on the TC, with 3.73 gears and 35 inch tires and a 2000RPM stall, off idle pickup is a little slow (until the boost builds @2.5K RPM)
Check TH400 mods here.

It's cheaper to machine the clutch packs down... Sitting behind my built 360 I'm running a TH350 that I built. I Machined the direct clutch piston to fit the extra friction and steel plate and set it so my total clearance was .045"-.048"... I also upgraded my sprag... I tossed in the extra Hurst hot shift II shift kit and did a few mods to the valve body. (Used tips from Hotrodders.com)...
I keep the tranny fluid as cool as possible... so far, no problems and she shifts fast with no hesitations. I normally drop it in 2nd and go from there holding the rpms a little higher before shifting.

Only if you have a Aluminum piston.

True... Junk Yard specials are always good for cheap spares... :t:

Yea that will give you running clearance but if you want to add a extra clutch (from 5 to 6) the piston needs to be faced off to make extra room for the 6 th clutch.
Unless you use the special Alto 6 disc package with the .060" inch steels.

I personally like the idea of having the thicker steel plates and machining the clutch pistons for more beef.
