I just pulled my timing chain cover to replace it due to low oil pressure. The timing chain appears to be in good shape with no noticeable indication of problems but....... The right side of the chain is nice and taught. The left side appears to be very loose to me. How do I measure how slack it is and what should it be?

How many miles are on your current set? Are they stock or the double roller style? It`s around $50 for a new double roller timing set. I just paid $99 shipped for 2 new Cloyes double roller sets off Egay. Replace them while you have it torn down, it`s cheap insurance.

It's cheap insurance as long as you're in there anyway. Any slop in the chain affects spark timing, since the distributor drives off the cam.

to check slack you turn it so one side is tight and all the slack is on one side. I dont have my manual but I think 1/2 inch of slack is about as much as I would like. Just to be safe I would replace it. Do a search for things to look for in the replacement. You need to make sure the oil slot is clear and free of burrs (looks like a smaller keyway in the gear bore.

You will always have slack on one side since it is driven from just one side. The other thing about cloyes is sometimes they dont have the oil slot in the right place

Dial Bulltear (651)-257-7917 and order timming set, oil pump mid-plate, and (hp) oil pump gear set. Thats what I did for my rebuild. Can't go wrong.
