I have a 84 CJ that the PO has swapped in a AMC 360 and AMC version TH400 trans And when I bought the jeep it had a problem with the starter engaging the flex plate every great once in a while, after inspecting the flex plate and starter I found one spot in the flex plate teeth that were completely ground away, and the others were showing wear. So I used it this way for some time, till I got a chance to pull the trans and replace both the starter and the flex plate, well after a year it is starting to do the same thing again. It looks as if the starter is only catching a small amount of the flex plate. Is there more than one starter available for this setup, looks as if it needs to engage the flex plate more. Also I only drive this jeep about 1000 miles a year so it sees little use.
