AMC 360 for sale

Believed to be a ’70-’71 and currently running in a ’70 AMX. The block casting number is 3195528 (’70-’84) and the car’s original Borg Warner M-12 transmission is mated to it, which was used through ’71. Intake number is 3195532 (4bbl for ’70 360/390 and ’71 360) and the valve cover tag is 509H30 (’72 304), but they might not be original. Topped with a fairly new Edelbrock 600 cfm carb. Overall, the engine runs well with a slight lope at idle (cam?), doesn’t burn or leak oil and I had been driving the car regularly, until the brakes went out a few weeks ago. Now I’m restoring the car and I found an original 390 to go back in it. The 360 comes complete except: alt, ps pump, fan pulley, spacer and fan. Hear it run before purchasing or I can e-mail a short video that I took the other day. $400, $100 of that will be a non-refundable deposit and I'll need a few days time to pull the engine. Hey can you check the head casting # and tell us whether its a 993 090 or 291?

I popped a cover off and the casting number was 3212990. Not sure what that is...

I think the 2990 head is a 304 head

The block # is right for a 360. Have you checked the displacement # on the block side, under the motor mount? It would have the early crank flange, not too valuable unless you're running a B/W trans. Not an easy swap to TF727 or TH400 trannies. The intake is just the ordinary 70-up 4bbl. Heads casting is a 304 (small valve), late 71, early 72, but with the bigger 58cc chamber. Kind of ruins the value of the whole deal IMO. Bob tufcj

Why would anyone put 304 heads on a 360? I did verify the "360" markings on the block near the motor mounts.

Understanding is, it is possible to machine the 304 heads and fit them with 2.02/1.68 360/401 size valves. Not saying that's what was done, but it is possible, and 304 head castings are "more plentiful", maybe easier to find, and could have been cheaper. Guess the only way to know would be to pull a head.

Because sometimes people just use what they have sitting around. Found the same thing on a 1970 390 that was sitting in a 78 CJ-7 with a YJ tub on it that I bought to part out. Guy put 304 heads on it (most likely from the 304 that came out of it) with a Torker. "Hey, lookie here! Dees damn heads go right on dare!"

Good thing I have 291's on the shelf. :mrgreen:
