Folks might someone educate me on how to determine what year an AMC engine was made? The reason I ask is I believe to do an engine swap in Cali one must use an engine of the same year or newer...yes?
TIA!~

Belay that....I just found planet houston and I have a 71-78 401. ( I knew I had a 401) SO my truck is a 79'. So NO WAY will the state ever pass this yes?

Just don't tell them its a 401. If you already have an AMC V8 that you are replacing with the 401, they won't be able to tell from looking at it.

I've been running a 1974 360 in a factory 304 1977 CJ for the last 20 years. I've only run into one emission test place with a person who knew enough to look for the displacement on the side of the block. I just played dumb, told them I didn't know the engine wasn't stock, and went somewhere else for the test.
I dont know Cali laws, but I doubt they go as far as checking casting numbers. If the VIN says it was a V-8, and it has an AMC V-8, I doubt there will be a problem.

that depends on a few things.
make sure ALL the required smog gear is on it and working.
normally they don't look at the block. i just smogged the wifies astro and the daughters ex cop car and they never lookes at the block. only took the vin and both flew threw the
test. i live in apple valley. also make sure its fully warmed up prior to the test or it will fail.
good luck
