looking for a good 401 build with 450 to 475 hp and 420 tg got 58 cc heads do i need to port and polish them or get alumnum heads do i need to do anything special to the crank want to run 10.1 compression going to run i beam or h beam rods what would be a good set up

Be aware that I or H beam rods available for the AMC 401 may have quality issues (you may need to set them up for full floating if they arent already). If you can get the pin bore right youll be ok. You can EASILY hit those numbers with a mildly ported head and a decent cam/intake/carb set. What RPM are you going to be running this motor up to? Where do you want the power?

around 6 to 65 if want power from 15 to 6 everybody around her said to put a chevy in it to hold up want to prove them wrong bought jeep cj7 new in 79 doing a full body off restore if it does 500hp then that is fine just need the right direction for motor

Sanddollar we are about to offer a CNC ported iron head for $680 a pair and if you use a good cam/carb and airgap intake you WILL hit those numbers. I dont think you neccesarily need to stroke it but definately will have a limited cam selection for that range.

My 401 built for truck pulls at fairs...stock crank, polished and shot peened rods, indy heads KB 10.5 to 1...very streetable. But it sounds mean. :t:

I'm sure it can be done and has been done with iron heads, but I built it with the idea of adding more power to this combo in the future. (enough isn't enough)

Just call Crower cams and they will set you up with a custom grind if need be. MC heads will probably flow more than my Indys also. #-o

You are really limited with the choice of good headers out there. My Headmans fit like crap.

how good are the elderbrock heads do i need to polish and balance motor do i need to cross drill crank what would be a good roller rockers for this motor have intake what would be a good carb also what would be good ignition msd or hei

Edelbrock heads are pretty nice they are very capable of pulling off those numbers. No you dont need to crossdrill the crank and Scorpion roller rockers or harland sharps will do the trick.

Anything under 550-600hp stock rods (if they are in good condition) should work fine. It would be a waste of money going to aluminum for that kind of power.

Right and ask him when he can get at it. I heard Barry is buried with work. No offense we dont even have a crate program ready but we are working on it. Barry may be able to get it in. No harm in giving him a call.
