Are there any other GM columns that are a direct replacement for a '79 CJ5. I found a place called Snake River Rod & Custom that sells rebuilt replacement columns. Any body have any feed back on them. I would rather not spent that much if I can find a used GM column that will be the same as the GM unit that jeep used.

If you can find one from a late 70s, early 80s Chevy Monza or Pontiac Sunbird (the rear drive ones), they will bolt in. The Camaro/Firebirds and Wagoneers are similar too, although I've never checked the brackets. You'd have to go to a bone yard with measurements for the mounting points and total length, and take time to pull a few. GM columns varied very little from model to model around that time frame.

I relented in my search and bought the Snake River tilt column for the 85 CJ (5-speed) - liked it so much I also got one for the 87 YJ (auto). I did cut the column connectors off and put in waterproof ones, but I have no complaints at all.
Bear in mind I don't have a lot of time to rummage the 'yards' to find parts most times. So Bob is probably correct (he usually is), but I did my searches on the net.

Thanks tufcj and Mudrat for your prompt reply. I didn't expect anybody to respond so quickly. I would imagine a used column would be more in my budget although I haven't checked any prices yet. I also have concerns about the longevity of a used unit. I have done a search for both new and rebuilt units. Snake River seems to have the best price for the rebuilds. The new units are completely out of the question. And like Mudrat I don't have a lot of time to rummage through junk yards. I am glad to hear that the snake river is a quality unit. Unless something better falls out of the sky, I guess I'll have to save my pennies and go for the Snake River unit.
