ironman_gq

We diagnosed it...pin missing from T/cover
ironman_gq
did it shift to the side or something? :-|
Mcktiger74cj5
im guessing just that little bit caused it ride on the cam gear funny.
ironman_gq
so did it kill the gear or just skip out and not mesh?

How? with all those bolts, how did it slide/twist/what ever?? What 'misalignment' (from torque or what ever) is allowed?
fifesjeep
I imagine it dropped or rotated a little without the use of the alignment pin. I know with all my covers there is a decent amount of clearance/play between the bolts and bolt holes. I definitely wouldn't try to align it without the pins. Worst case scenario, you could always use those cheap china drill bits as alignment pins... I forgot what size I used (metric) but it was a snug fit... (I had to tap the cover with a dead blow) As for the alignment, If you think about it, the slightest offset with the given distance between the distributor opening and where the gears are supposed to mesh will have a dramatic effect on the gears meshing properly. It all boils down to a poor design. If they would've casted the blocks differently like Chevy etc things would be peachy.
