bigjeep85 if anyone has a front dana 60 laying around i need the distance from the back side of the inner knuckle to the wheel mounting surface on the hub. i am thinking about building a front axle out of a rear axle. thanks
dan58 You can make it any width you want. I would question the need though. Chevy and Dodge 60s have really dropped in price. You can get a complete axle now for under $600 these days. If you chose to build one, you'll have more money that that just in knuckles and inner Cs. http://www.rc4x4.org/rcforum/index.php/topic,3581.0.html
dan58 ironman_gq wroteunless he has some parts lying around like a bent or cracked front axle. :t: Take it from a guy with a low pinion front....find a way to get high pinion.
ironman_gq they are out there you just need to look around and you might not get the diff on the right side but there are ways around that. they may not be cheap or easy but they are doable.
bigjeep85 the problem is that i need a ford front 60 and the cheapest i have found is $750.00. i think that is too much for an axle that i will most likely have to rebuild and convert to high steer. i would much rather have a high pinion ford but i dont know if i can find one for a reasonable price. i really dont want to have to build an axle but it is an option if i have too. although i will keep looking until my time runs out. i want to be back on the trails by spring. i did manage to get the measurements i was looking for on pirate4x4 though. its 11 5/8 inches from the back side of the inner C to the the mounting surface on the hub.
ironman_gq :-| Has anyone ever thought about taking a GM 14 bolt and retubing it and putting knuckles on it to make a crazy strong front axle? 111!!! Would this even be feasable? I know it would hang kinda low but if you shave it it would be incredibly strong. Maybe use dana 60 outers and custom shafts
bigjeep85 john sumner has been building them for over ten years. retubing the passenger side is gonna be the problem. and the custom inners is number two on the hard to get list. use dedenbear inner c's and dana 60 outers and your good to go. :lo1l:
bigjeep85 i have been watching that. they narrowed theres. but plan on keeping them full width with dedenbear inner knuckles instead of cranes.
dan58 14bolts are boat anchors. They're just toooo big to use in the front of a rig with a tire under 44s. You're still stuck with a low pinion, and how many people really break a R&P? $750 is about as cheap as you'll find a used Ford HP60, unless you stumble into something. High steer isn't that bad anymore. The part that gets expensive is the knuckles. Ford 60 knuckles are very very prone to breaking. Most everyone is replacing them with Dedenbear/Reid Racing knuckles. If you are into building, go for a Spidertrax 9" housing and a Hi-9 center section.
ironman_gq get the ford d60 and see if you can put dodge or chevy knuckles on it you can just grind the weld out and pound em off.

I talked the guy into him keeping everything but the axles. 111!!! Score. :!:
highlandercj-7 I bought a 77 D60 Chevy front for $50.00. Then I ran across a deal on an 89 Chevy D60 Dually front for $100 complete with lock out hubs. The $50.00 diff needed lock outs and spindles, but it had SRW hubs. I'm keepin it to have spare shafts. Sometimes you get lucky and walk into a deal.
