Should I use it? One manual says nothing about it and the other says if you want to.
Seems like this could have something to do with wear.

Use it if you have it. It helps set the proper height for gear mesh and keeps you from getting an annoying oil puddle on top of the timing cover.

It helps from getting corrosion in the precision hole that your distributor slides into. If you ever come across a motor without the gasket and one that has been sitting for a while you may find the distributor just wont come out.
