I have a 74 AMC 401 in my CJ. My current headers are too long for my new trans. I need some shorty headers or stock exhaust manifolds. Where would be the best place to find these? Thanks

Bone yards. The right manifold is the same on all AMC cars, trucks, and Wagoneers (except the Pacer) from 1971-1991, You need a left from 1971-1985 (about) with the outlet in the middle. The later ones had the outlet at the back, and will hit the firewall on a CJ.
All exhaust manifolds are the same from 304-401, so whatever you find will work. You can find some 1971-1974 truck manifolds that aren't drilled for the air tubes.
I see them pop up on ebay quite often. You can even get new repros, but they are about $150 each.

that is what I keep seeing. The stock are as much as headers if purchased new. What about the Edlebrock shorty headers, from Summit. About $360 for the full kit (bolts, gaskets, etc).

I picked up a set of stock exhaust manifolds w/air. I don't want to use the air. I believe they are 9/16 threads, but seem loose. The 14mmn doesn't fit. Is 9/16 threads correct. Also I need the bolts to install them. Does anyone know the size bolts I will need for the manifold install.

I plugged a set with Allen head pipe plugs. They are a little loose, but the hole has a lip at the bottom. I covered the threads with high temp RTV (Permatex copper) and ran them in till they bottomed. Never leaked. I suppose a couple of spot welds could also be used.

I found the correct 9/16 bolts and used some copper RTV and just bottomed them out at about 25 ft lbs. I get the exhaust put on next Friday and will finally run it to see what happens. Thanks for the help on this.
