I am swapping out a T-18 for a TF-727. The motor currently has regualar headers. Will the new trans fit with these or do I have to go to shorty headers or even back to the stock exhaust manifolds?

Regular inframe headers (headman) will not work with a 727 according to the fitment information. Doug Thorley and Edelbrock will work. Any fenderwell header will work.

I got the tranny up and mounted. The driver side up right of the header is in the way. I need to bring it down or over about an 1 1/2". Can I head it up and bend it over or will this not work?

gonna be hard to heat up 4 thin tubes and bend em without burning through or kinking one or even crack one at the flange. you might get away with it but i wouldnt get your hopes up too high. also make sure the rest of your system will still line up if you adjust your header

If it's just one tube, it might be possible for a muffler shop to cut it out and bend a replacement tube. It's nearly impossible to heat/bend the tubes without smashing or kinking them.
I like my factory manifolds, much less prone to leaking, and I really don't see any drop in power in the RPM range I use for 4-wheeling (idle-3000).

where would be the best place to find the stock manifolds for the 401. Should I go new or try and find some used ones.
ironman_gq
ebay if you want used 4wd.com has new ones i think but they arent that cheap. I have a set of well used manifolds sitting in my garage. they have air tube fittings that a PO plugged and a broken stud but I dont think they were cracked.

The good thing is all right side V-8 manifolds are the same from 1971-1991, the lefts are the same from 1971-1985?, these have the outlet in the middle. 1986-1991 lefts have the outlet at the rear, and will hit the firewall on a CJ.
The only other difference is some of the early 70s weren't drilled for the air tubes.
