Motorcraft 2150 carb question

Hello, i am a noob here and just learning the forum... i am in the process of doing a build up of a long block AMC 304. the build is for a 1978 Jeep CJ-7... i am pretty sure my current 2bbl carb (motorcraft 2150) is in good working order, however, there is some type of heater tube that comes off the back of the carb and into the intake manifold that cycles through and comes back out into the carb again. i have looked on-line for an explanation for this tube but have not been successful. i assume it has something to do with the choke. my questions: 1. the current 'heater tube' is rusted through. where can i get a replacement? 2. can i bypass this and opt for a manual choke instead?

Yes, that is the Choke Stove. There is a closed loop horseshoe tube inside the intake manifold in a seperate chamber that has exhaust gas passing through the chamber, not the closed loop. Should make sure the closed loop horseshoe tube is intact with no rust through holes. This is what the tubes from the carb attach to. Carb pulls air through the choke housing to heat it through these tubes. This is why the one end attaches to the air horn to be filtered. Yes, can be bypassed/omitted if changing to an electric choke. But the closed loop horseshoe must remain in the intake manifold. If tube is rusted through, the two tube holes on the outside surface can be welded up if changing to an electric choke and the stove is no longer needed. Closed loop horseshoe to intake gasket comes in the engine kit. Not sure where to get replacement steel tubes. Not sure if they happen to be same size as 3/16 or 1/4 steel brake lines. Have seen parts store kits that have a small coil of aluminum tube.

thanks for the info AMX!! i thought this was the case... just wanted to be sure. instead of going with an electric choke i'm thinking about a installing a manual cable choke instead only because i have no clue how to install an electric choke and what wires to use. if i take out the horseshoe tube inside the intake and spot weld the two openings to the flange closed then i could seal up the intake manifold in this manner??

youd be a lot happier with the electric choke you only need to connect it to a wire that is hot when the ignition is in the run position.

Agree, electric choke is convienent.
Your vehichle, your choice.

If the Horseshoe tube is intact with no rust through holes in the tube loop
it can be bolted back in place on the intake with a good gasket the way it is
and the 2 tube holes on top of the flange can be left open.
If a spare is on hand, just cut the tube loop off and plug weld the 2 tube holes, make it a block-off plate.
Or if the means are available, make a block off-plate from ₃/16 plate,
and save the existing horsehoe plate for another day, if it's in good shape.
Holley may even still sale a block off-plate for the AMC intake choke stove hole.
It's listed as Holley Part No. 301-24 in an old catalog on hand.
