how much free play should there be between the gear and the body casting . ( motorcraft type ) Mine is very snug . do you remove metal from the gear ? there is one very thin shim between the gear and the body . any help would be great . or tell me were to look on this site Please thanks

I've seen them anywhere from .020" up to .100". The low end of the scale is best, but you don't want it to drag. It should spin freely. If there is more than one thrust washer between the body and gear, you could remove some, but you want one there to prevent wear between the steel gear and aluminum body. Bob tufcj

So do you get the free play by taking metal off the top of the gear ? I do not have any shims to take out. just the one for to keep the gear from eating the alu. body .

Moroso #26140 is a Distributor Gear Shim Kit that has
(2) .010", (2) .020", & (1) .053" Shims for about $4.
Maybe one from the kit is thinner than the stock shim.
Stock Shim in a 1973 401 Delco Points Dizzy was .032" thick.
Pretty sure the Dizzy gear spring pin is 3/16 dia. x 3/4 long
if you'd want to have extras on hand for if needed.
Assuming your dizzy drive gear end is the same as an earlier Delco.
Recently re-shimmed one to decrease endplay from .072" to .017".
