I read somewhere the other day that there is a short and regular length snout for amc v8 water pumps...can anyone help me here? Im installing a taurus fan and am having diffculties in fitment...plus i found out the bearings in my pump are bad.
JERSEYJOE
Hey Brett it's Jersey Joe from the IFSJA. You are correct there are two different lengths. I assume you are working on a CJ where space is tight. My instinct tells me that the cut off year was 1973 and down for the short pump. I could be wrong. You might go to the local NAPA or other store and have them pull out a pump for a 1970 AMC 360 and one from a 1980 and up.
Someone else here might know exactly..
Welcome. great bunch of people here just like IFSJA..

The short water pump isn't going to help you much. The bottom pulley has to be changed. The 72-back lower pulley is 3 bolt, 73-up is 4 bolt. You'd need to find the water pump, water pump and crank pulleys, and harmonic (matched to your engine). All to gain less than 1/2".

Thanks for all the replys, and i see now that its not worth the 1/2" that id be gaining. Ill just trim the fan shroud a bit

if you push the fan to the passenger side of the radiator and use the flange on the shroud to bolt it up it should fit by the pulley by about an inch. I run mine this way and have never had it touch.

thanks for pointing out the significant complications when converting from tall to short water pumps.
Was aware, but that info was missing from the water pump notes file.
Have added those specifics to the notes for future reference.
Info anyone would want to know along with the height specs.
Good catch.

Thanks for the replies yall. Got it all put in about a month ago. Havent had much time to test it out due to hurricane Ike a few weeks back. ended up movinh the fan as far right as i could nad trimmed 1/2" off the edges. now to find a heavy duty relay for the high speed side...

waytek wiring waytekwire.com item number #75552 very tough high capacity relay and reasonably priced I think its a 75Amp relay. I would try to seal any relay you use if your in a wet enviroment. they dont like water getting inside them very much. just pour epoxy into all of the seams and fill the cavity that the terminals come out of with epoxy so it is water tight.
