401 Build #2

Another 401 build. Getting close to final assembly. Some specs: Target is 400/500 hp/torque KB354 pistons Head work like recommended in "Performance American Style" with some changes for current thinking about valve size and grinds. (Whew! Lots of money in these heads, hope they don't crack) CR will be about 9:1 or a little higher. All the good stuff - align bore, balanced, honed with torque plate, etc. Engine will be run on the dyno when finished. Plan on putting in CJ7 (all steel) with TH400, but may move to an AMC car with manual tranny later. Anyone know how much a stock V8 CJ7 weighs? Help - any recommendations for cam/intake/carb?

I can't wait to see what the dyno numbers are. We're dying to put ours on a dyno, but our tranny is slipping real bad right now and it wouldn't be a fair test. We used those same pistons. What else are you going to use on the engine as far as cam, intake, carb, etc.?

Haven't decided on the cam/intake/carb yet. Want to make power from 2K to 6K, thinking about Eddy performer/air gap/torquer, and a 750/800 Eddy or Holley. Cam is still under consideration. May call Howard's and ask for a rec.

We used a Performer, but Fuzz keeps telling us we should have gone with an Air Gap, and he certainly seems to have the right recipe, ha, ha. I was just reading that the latest, greatest, fastest, hottest, most expensive Vette Chevy ever produced, the 628 HP 2009 ZR1, runs an 11.3 quarter mile. Fuzz is running 12 seconds in his lifted 79 CJ7 flying brick! That's pretty dang impressive!

I agree. Wish Fuzz would kick in with some advice here. Tire size, gear ratio, tranny? I plan on doing 12 or better, even if I have to give it a shot of NOS.

I'd go for higher CR, an AirGap, and a Holley 850 Double Pumper.
One of the HP series or a QuickFuel Carb if the budjet is there.
Or the Holley list #0-9380 with Annular Discharge Boosters.
A cam that will work in that rpm range with have more duration
which will delay intake valve closing and decrease dynamic CR.

Yeah, Fuzz's compression ratio is way up there with his flat top pistons. The downside is he has to use racing fuel that costs something like $8 per gallon, but I don't want to be putting out any misinformation here so I'll let Fuzz post the facts.

I have around 12:1 cr in my motor
my cam is a crower solid 292FDP 500/510 lift
246/250 duration at 050 lift

wanting to go 12s and lower I would look at this cam or a little bigger - elec fule pump and no smaler then 8 an hose or you can starve the motor on the top end

how much street/ off road are you going to doing?? if more track I would go with a 950HP holley carb or a quick fule 950 one

tranny conveter depends how you are going to drive it - gears depends on what size tires you run

my heads 6090 I just cleaned the intake runners up and ground up the bowels - exhaust clean the compleat port up never touched the chamber at all [/i]

Mosty a cruiser, some offroad, and once in a while at the track. However, overkill is good. I am thinking about a power adder (blower or NOS) but it seems everyone I talk to goes nuts on the amc needing O-ringed, extra head bolts, splayed main caps, and other expensive stuff. Can't I just put a little spray or boost on once in a while on a very well built bottom end. For heaven sakes it is forged crank, forged rods, and KB pistons. Is the head going to blow off at 6K? What is up with this?

Picked a cam - Reed Cams TM276H/TM280H/110a2. Also decided on the Eddy air gap manifold with a 770 Holley and Harland Sharp roller rockers. The engine simulator software says this one should push 400hp and 450tq. Should have it together in another month or so and we will see.

I am running the Reed cam TM282H/TM286H/110A2 in my 401 with 10.5 comp. Its a little big for my fiberglass Jeep CJ5...but it will scream! :lo1l:
