pretty hard to tell they all look pretty similar and have the same parts. why do you want to know what kind they are?

Thanks for asking. Just bought this 401 a month ago and getting ready to put her in my scrambler. It had been setting for a few months and it appeared a little water had got into about 4 lifters. Not bad, but did set up some rust and stick the insides of a couple of them. The guy I bought it from in Calif said it had been rebuilt including a new cam and lifters. I took the intake off just to look at things and noticed the lifters. Took them out just to take apart and clean up and noticed the spring tension wasn't very good on the ones that had been compressed by the push rods. The lifters have break-in wear only on the bottom but the spring tension bothered me.
My thought is to buy some new lifters(if I can find out what brand they are) replace the insides of the lifters so to have good spring tension. That way I don't take a chance wiping off a lobe since I would be using the same lifters.
Am I making sense? Sound doable?

Sounds like you could do it if you can find the correct guts. If it doesn't have a lot of run time, generally you can get away with a new lifter on a used cam, but you should NEVER put a used lifter on a new cam. If you go with a new lifter, just go with a procedure like it was a first time run-in. LOTS of assembly lube, use a break-in oil or a ZDDP additive, and run for 20 minutes at 2000 RPM. Bob tufcj

Nobody sells Johnson lifters. They are out of business for a while now. Johnsons got bought out now but I thought they moved their operations to Mexico...I could be wrong about that but I think Delphi lifters are just as good. I do know the soft Mexican lifters blow goats.

I don't want to be around when any goats get blown! lol! Any way of knowing if the Delphi guts are the same as the Johnson or is it a different made lifter? I need the guts of a Johnson (or equivalent) to put in the Johnson case......Or replace the 4 questionable ones (or all) with new complete lifters. Suggestions?

Best bet is to replace them and get a spare and have them rockwell tested for hardness. Melling calls out 58-64Rc

Oh its a std for measuring the surface hardness of a given material. Rockwell states on the highest scale that Diamond is 100Rc because it is the hardest known material. For example 4130-4340 Chromoly is about 25-28Rc from most mills in USA and Canada. Axles come in around 36-40Rc and 300M ujoints are in the 50's after hardening. You should get the hardness checked. Pay 10 or 20 bucks to have them tested and if they share the same hardness run the new ones.

Don't know if it's any help or not,
but AMC Lifters from Elgin are part number HL2011 for "Standard Lifters"
#HL2011HV = "Hi Velocity" put more oil up top supposedly ? and
#HL2011HP = "Hi Performance" for use with adjustable valve train ?
Those are notes made when talking to an Elgin rep anyways.
Wonder if the Elgin lifters internals are the same as what you have ?
