79 CJ Axle Info

I know the rear axle housing on a 79 CJ7 with Q-Trac is offset, but is the front axle housing the same on all CJ's from that year? (Or is there something "different" about the front q-trac axle as well?) If not, does anybody have a front axle (Narrow Trac Dana 30 with 4:10 gears) that they want to part with? Thanks!

The only difference is that it has permanently locked hubs. Throw on some selectable hubs and you are good to go like any other CJ.

Throw hubs on it without a part time kit in the Q-trac, and it won't move with the hubs unlocked, unless the emergency drive is activated. In it's normal mode, the q-track is like an open diff in the t-case. With hubs unlocked, the front axles and driveshaft will spin, but the Jeep won't move. All other dimensions and specs of the front are the same, except for the full time drivers in the front, like stated above. 79 should be a "big brake" axle, with 1 1/8" thick rotors, and a caliper bracket that is NOT bolted to the knuckle (6 bolts to the spindle). Look around for a factory 4 cylinder CJ, they had 4.10s in them stock, BUT they have the smaller brakes. You can bolt the big brakes on by changing outer knuckles. Bob tufcj

Good point, I was just thinking he was swapping in a QT front axle into a nonQT Jeep. :oops:
