82cherokee
My starter went out yesterday, so I went down and picked a new one up from NAPA. I put it on this morning. It starts up fine, but when you put it in drive it starts making all sorts of noise. I pulled the starter and it looks like the teeth on the flywheel and the starter are hitting. I've got a new one on the way, but if it does the same thing, any ideas? Thanks
Oh I have a 82 cherokee with a 360. thanks again.

Do you still have your old starter? If so measure the depth from the mounting flange to the end of the cone (may not be machined properly).

When your in park does it make any noise?
Auto or standard?

The statement "putting in drive" tells me you have an auto trans, I think you may have a broken flexplate.
