Did AMC use a GM-style alternator? What was the stock output on those? Running the stock alternator at low (rockcrawling) RPM isn't enough to run the Taurus fan on high for the day. In turn, my tranny gets hot from not enough air flow. I have a monster B&M cooler on it too. I'd like to fine a high-output replacement alternator. Anything that I might source in a junkyard? Thoughts?

the late 70's were gm just have to clock them to fit and get the amperage you need

Hmm. Mine is early 70s, but it may have been retrofitted.

they were motorcraft with the external regulator and went to gm si units in the late 70's the conversion is a bolt on swap if you use a 1wire alternator.

I can work with a 1-wire alt. I think even 90 amps or so would be better. I don't think the stock one is putting out much more than 40. Do you have a model and year that would work best? When you say 1-wire, it would only have the wire to the battery, correct? Will they work with a V-belt configuration? I don't have a serpentine belt setup. Don't ask my how or why, but mine is set up halfassed from the previous owner. It has one large red wire to the battery, one black wire that was hanging (I think it was for a dash light?), and one small red one that ALSO goes to the battery. :-| I don't get it. I'd think that small red one should go to a switched source, right? Somehow or another, the battery always has a charge, so it doesn't drain it.

the hanging wire is probably for the switched source the small red one that goes to the battery is probably the sense wire for the regulator. most of the si alternators will self generate and work without the switched wire hotrodders used to do it to cut down on wiring clutter. as for what to look for just get one with the 180 degree clocking wherer the two mounting ears are opposite each other with the plug somewhere between the two on the left as you look from the pulley end. any auto parts store should be able to get you the right one and probably has it in stock for about $80 or less for a reman unit.

It looks as though the GM CS-144 would work. Will it work with a V-belt pulley though?

Hmm...that would make a swap a helluva lot easier then. :lo1l: So, would the CS-144 just be a direct swap then?

everything but the wiring plug i believe. if you get the one wire version it will be a bolt on.

Will I still be able to run the CS-144 with just one belt? I need two for my PS pump.

one should do it just fine. I was running a 140amp powermaster alternator on one belt with no problems.

Those are the early Motorola style brackets in your pictures.

Are the late model alternator brackets better to use with a GM style altermator
than the early AMC brackets originally made for the Motorola style alternator ?

I think these are the late model brackets made for the GM style.
Found on 1976 to 1980 I think, is that the right years ???

I have an 86 360 sitting in the garage. Would it be a good idea to swap the brackets from the 86 motor?
