Ok, today is the first warm day we have had since I got my CJ running. When it gets hot my CJ seems to starve for fuel. I am pretty sure it's not vapor lock because when I take the fuel cap off I get a pretty heavy sucking sound and I start getting fuel again.
The book says a 79 CJ7 should have a non-vented cap. Should I try to find a vented cap and if so, which year vented cap will fit a 79?
Thanks.

The tank should be vented thru the charcoal canister. IF it's still there. There is also a tip-over valve under the driver rear fender, up near the tail light. Chances are that the valve, lines or charcoal canister are clogged. I just removed all the vent parts, looped the 2 lines together on top of the tank with a short piece of fuel hose, and put on a vented cap, like you said.
Any cap for a 75 or older jeep should be a vented style.

Thanks for the tip!
Just one more question though, will a early cap fit on a later Jeep? Isn't the filler neck a different size?
Thanks again!

The filler tubes are different, but the caps are the same all the way until they went to the screw-in type.
