Should I be able to turn the front driveshaft on my 2000 silverado 2500 when in 2wd? I ask because in 2wd I cant turn the shaft and it seems to still be engaged in the t-case I know that the front disconnect isnt connected. Also which case do I have?

If it's still connected to the case and axle, it shouldn't be able to turn it because the chevys don't have locking hubs.

the front end on the chevys has a center disconnect that lets the axle spin without turning the drive shaft. my problem is the I think it should diengage in the tcase but it isnt. I have the push button selector and Im wondering if my motor isnt working properly.

The t-case should be a NV263 if it's electrically shifted (button on the dash), or a NV261 if you have a lever on the floor.
It has a disconnect in the front axle (electric), and should be free to turn if 2WD is selected on the dash or lever.
These also had a problem with a rattle clip on the internal oil pump breaking, and the oil pump retainer wearing thru the rear case, causing them to leak dry. My 2003 2500HD with the 263 did it, luckily I caught it before it went dry. The rear case half was $425 from the dealer, an improved oil pump retainer $250, + gaskets, fluids, and time. Dealer wanted $1100+ for the job, rebuilt t-cases are $1200-1400.

how can this problem be fixed? I'd like it to work properly and not have my driveshaft turning all the time considering how much gas costs these days.

Either the axle disconnect or t-case disconnect isn't working. To test, I'd drop the front drive shaft at the t-case. If the t-case yoke won't turn, it's in the t-case. If the drive shaft won't spin, it's the axle disconnect.
The axle disconnect is a module on the back of the axle housing, the t-case may be the shift solenoid, but I'm not sure how to replace that.

If the t-case shifts 4hi/4lo and back I'd suspect the disconnect, if not I'd look at a problem in the case. If it's an auto case the clutch packs in the case may be turning it which is a normal condition

I can hear it engaging in the case when I try to turn the shaft while standing under it on the lift. I think it might be either the shift motor or something to do with the output speed sensors on the front output. Im gonna do some more looking around next time I can get it on the lift.
