Exhaust manifold bolts

On a stock AMC 360 with stock manifolds, what do you guys use when you have to replace a broken manifold bolt? I have seen people say to use standard grade 8 bolts in place of the stock hollow type. Thoughts? :-|

My local Ace Hardware and NAPA both sell grade 8 studs, just like the original. I always heat the old ones to cherry red before trying to remove them if they're rusty. Bob tufcj

What are these studs you speak of? The two Wags I own both had bolts. Plus there are 2 different sizes. The two front and rear are 1/2 and the 2 in the middle are 9/16.

I like the idea of studs. Makes putting on the gasket much easier.

I was thinking the studs that hold the exhaust pipe to the bottom of the manifold. :razz: :razz: I've just used grade 8 bolts to hold them to the heads on several engines, no problem. Only the newer heads have 2 sizes, the older heads are all the same size. Bob tufcj

Oh. I was talking about the bolts that hold the exhaust manifolds to the heads. Perciate it.

If I remember correctly the outters are 3/8 the inners are 5/16 I used allen head bolts when I put headers on the wag I drove for a while.

When I was putting the headers on the 304 in my Jeep one of the guys in the base auto shop here said he'd seen some high temperature anti seize kicking around. He managed to find this little can of it and recommended I put it on the header bolts. The stuff is pretty slick, I can take the bolts out pretty easy and they barely seem to rust. It looks like it's copper based and it seems a bit runnier than the regular zinc anti seize but it works like a charm. I'll try to get the name of it next time I'm over there.

I think permatex makes it. most auto parts stores have it on the shelf right next to the other kind.

Yeah this is the stuff. It was a tiny little bottle but I guess you don't go through a lot of it.
