So I installed a Bulltear HEI distributer in my AMC 360 v8 and I am having some issues. It runs pretty decent with the vacuum advance unplugged and the timing set at an initial 6 degrees... but the moment I plug the advance into my edelbrock 600cfm carb at the 700rpm idle the advance jumps up to over 20 degrees and the jeep idles fine but runs like shit going down the road of course. Why is the timing advancing so much at idle with the vacuum advance plugged in? I have never messed with adjusting the vacuum advance on any type of distributer before. Is this even adjustable? How do I go about turning it "down"? I did not have this issue with the stock setup, as soon as I plugged the advance in at idle it would only bump up a few degrees.
Help!

Sounds like you are using the wrong port on the carb. It should be the timed port, which is the one on the right front side if I remember correctly. Either that, or you carb is not ajusted correctly at idle, and the butterflys are partially open. There should not be any vacuum going to the dist. at idle.

Hmm, I am using the right front port on the carb and there is vacuum. What could cause this?

It sounds like the butterflys are partially open at idle, which uncovers the the hole that provides vacuum to the timed port. The butterflys need to be closed at idle, so your carb is not tuned properly. Check the port on the left at idle and see if there is vacuum there, if not, use that one.

on holleys the timed port is on the passenger side of the metering block about half way up if I remember correctly. the one on the front is the manifold vacuum.
