Hood Cowl

Anyone know where to get a hood cowl for a cj5. The 360 under there I need to exhaust the heat for better cooling. :?

A couple of places make fiberglass hoods with scoops and vents. Google "fiberglass CJ hood". Here's a quick one I found.

I found the hood louvers from an early 70s Datsun 240Z worked pretty well in the hood of my CJ. Just wandered around a junkyard looking at hood louvers until I found those. Lowered running temps by about 10 degrees.

If you want to keep the steel hood, some hot-rod shops can stamp louvers in your hood. Kind of pricey though, most I've seen get about $2 per louver.

I want shark gills cut in the hood :wink: 5 on each side. Like a real shark, not the inaccurate Beamer style :mrgreen:

I can get the louver die for my bead roller, but don't have the space to man-handle a hood through it :oops:

I used a set of Race Ace aluminum louvers on my 2000 XJ, and noticed a bit of underhood cooling happen, maybe a couple of degrees. I wanted to do the same thing for my CJ, but cheaper, and I found some cool looking vents for boat motor exhaust at a local boat store. They were stainless steel and cheap. They look pretty good on the hood too. Now that I'm running homemade flat fenders with no inner fender wells they're kind of useless, but they still look cool so I left them there.

Kinda of crappy pics, all I have is a cell phone cam. But that's my baby. When I still had the stock fenders I had a bit of an overheating problem so I bought those louvers to try and help. Turned out the shitpump that I bought the Jeep from had some tiny little rad in it that wasn't up to the task and I was too thick to look there first. I installed a shiny new proper rad and a hi flow water pump and the problem went away. Kept the louvers though, they look kind of neat.

With maybe a shrimp (or a rubber leg??) as a hood hold down 111!!!

My Heep is bright red (this is Jacks old hood) so making flesh tones and dark highlights would be easy :?:

No, they're a complete unit. I found a pic similar to them:

I just blasted them up, painted them black, cut proper sized holes and in they went.

Maybe it's time we discuss PLACEMENT of the louvers?? On top would allow water directly down on the air cleaner, carb and engine, on the side?? I jsut have the air cannister and the battery (opposite sides). I think either top or side would allow heat out, butthe side would protect the carb a little better.

Thoughts?

I thought about that, but not a lot. I've got the typical 14" air filter housing which is raised up a bit and has a drop on the lower half of the housing. It's not likely water is going to get into it from the top, I'm much more likely to have water shoot into it from the Krawlers as I have no inner fender wells now. I should get some, they salt the hell out of the roads here and *everything* gets covered in the crap.

Instead of all thoughs fancy louvers, just make yourself some 1" blocks, install them under the hood hinge on the body.
The blocks I made are 1" square tubing, I cut them 3 1/2" long, found some square black plastic plugs (fence section) at Home Depot to finish them off. They work great and at first glance you don't know they are there.

If you insist on cutting up your hood, find a custom shop and have some real louvers stamped/cut into the hood. Those are real cool!
