I just got a 83 cj7 with the ford type electronic ingnition installed and a rochester 2 jet. It idles like a champ but I have to pedal past some dead spot cough sputter areas to get up into the RPM's. I was going to go with the HEI and MC2100 carb or holly 350 cfm center hung float carb instead, any thoughts.

I had problems with my holley 600 with an off-idle flat spot that refused to go away with any amount of tuning work. I finally switched to an edelbrock performer and am much happier.
with your carb I would strip it down and clean all the circuits out really well then check the accelerator pump and transition circuits.

I hate to tell this story on myself but: Double check the Accelerator pump nozzles (where it actually squirts into the bores.) I fought a tuning issue for a month.. I never gave a thought that the nozzles could plug.. and I never actually looked.. so check the simple stuff first..
