Exhaust system help

I'd like some advice about hanging an exhaust system back in my 1976 CJ5. When I got it it had fender well headers and duals out the side through glass packs. I've taken all that out and installed factory manifolds. What I want is a system that gives me the best low end torque. The engine is a stock 304. I'm not able to find any pre-made OEM style systems for sale so I'll either build it myself or have a shop do it. What would be the best configuation for my application. This will be a strickly trail vehicle.

single 2.5 inch exhaust will probably be best and easiest to route past the tranny and t-case. you can still buy favtory y pipes through 4wd.com I think in they're replacement parts section, or a shop should be able to build you something.

I ran mine this way. I see very little change from headers/duals except over 5000 RPM, where it drops off a little.

Yep, They've got the y-pipe. That's the biggest part of it. Everything else is available just about everywhere else. Thanks!

Heres how mine was ran. 2.5 all the way out the back off stock manifolds.

i just got mine done today and this is how i did it...i used a flowmaster super 44 off road muffler..and it sounds bad ass....

Only problem with that is that it hangs below the driveshaft and is more vulnerable to damage and could hit the yoke on the tcase if it were to hit something

yeah i thought about that but it is tucked up above the skid plate and if that does happen then i have a really good excuse to put in a 4 to 1 case

We did something similar to Mike4089, but went over the top. The floor sure gets hot! Here's the way ours came out...

2 1/2" into muffler, 3" out. Sounds BAD, meaning GOOD!

We used stock exhaust manifolds, and crossed over above the transfer case. We couldn't run true duals because of the anti-wrap bar being in the way on the passenger side. We have a 3" body lift, so that helped with getting over the t-case. Still need to add some insulation above the pipe as the floor gets pretty hot there by the cross over.

The muffler is a single inlet/dual outlet glass pack flipped around backwards. It is a little too long and kept us from humping the pipe up over the rear axle to give it clearance like we wanted to. Next time will look for a shorter muffler.
