need quick dummy help

This is going to make all you AMC pros laugh...well, a lot. I've never bothered to look at the side of the block to see the displacement of the engine. I've been told by two different people that the motor is a 360. Low and behold, I popped the intake off, and I see something unexpected. The casting numbers 304 on the top of the block. Surely it can't be..... :oops: I just got cleaned up and have no desire to go back out to the garage to look at the side of the block.

Curiosity killed the cat, so I went out to the garage. It's indeed a 360, by the casting on the outside of the block. So, what does the 304 mean?

common Matt - I'm not THAT bad, but what's the answer to Dan's question? I really don't know what the 304 on top and 360 on the side means. YOU'RE the Guru!!! 8)

My jeep was just the opposite. I bought a 79 cj5 on ebay. The ad listed it as having a 304. Fine. I had someone trailer it from Ohio to RI. It ran rough at first. After installing HEI ignition, and reset the timing, it ran good. This was just temporary, until my 360 was ready to drop in. But, this jeep ran REAL good. Fast! One day, I was replacing the motor mounts. I'm under the jeep with the droplight. I look up at the numbers cast onto the side of the block....lo, and behold...401! That explains the "fast" thing. Needless to say, that made my day! now I have a 360 to sell... :?
