dave44 ok now that i have some great opinions on the 304.what size carb do i need for a stocker if a 600 is to big .
tufcj I don't think a 600 is too big. Just don't use a double-pumper, anything with vacuum secondaries will be OK. I ran a Holley 600 and Edlebrock performer manifold on a stock 304 (with headers) for several years. Got mileage comparable with the 2BBl. Bob tufcj
BREK ironman_gq wroteand what would that be? I cant seem to manage better than 8-10mpg at 60 Dang I wish my 390 got that kind of mileage, but then again at 60 I am pulling about 3300rpm.
ironman_gq im about 2800 with 4.56's and 35's. Im only running a mild 304 so I figured I should be able to get 10-12 without too much trouble but I might be wrong.
Rhinolined360 Holley Truck Avenger 470 or 670cfm, they have some kind of application that helps you figure it out on their site
76-cj7 When i did tha calculations my motor came out to need something around 540 CFMs so maybe a 500 edelbrock might not be a bad choice but i choose to go with a 570 strret avenger holley and have had no problems quite yet with my 304
hugh I'm running a 470 Truck Avenger with my 304 and 4.10 gears and a TF 999 auto and 35 bfg's and it runs around 2800 rpm at 60 mph .I.m getting 10 to 12 mpg. By keeping the speed down to say 55 it gets a little better. But we all are driving Jeeps and they aren't very aerodynamic. Heres a formula to help determine how much carb to get: CFM = max rpm x displacement in cubic inches x .80 divided by 3'456. Say you have a 304 you want to be able to rev to 5000 rpm that formula would give you 350 CFM. Most Jeep motors rarely see 500 rpms except for nice long uphills, in the rocks mine never gets higher than 1000 rpm. I got this info out of a book called Jeep 4x4 performance handbook by Jim Allan.
dbesade ironman_gq wroteand what would that be? I cant seem to manage better than 8-10mpg at 60 :-| I was getting 14 to 18 MPG with a Stocker 304 with Performer Intake/Performer 1406 Carb. -Dave
