gas is getting real expensive, I used to have a Toyota Landcruiser with a 3.5 liter 4 cyl diesel, it got 28mpg always. How about an adapter plate of some sort to mate up a diesel to a Jeep transfer case? Which leads me to another one, a good diesel motor around the 2.5 to 4 liter size. Oh yeah, that Toy was unstoppable off road due to the torque.

Cummins 4bt is 3.9 liter and uses an adapter to a GM pattern. But at around 800? lbs..........its one heavy motor.

you could look into an old mercedes diesel and see if anyone could make an adapter for it. or if you really want a small motor look for one of the old rabbit diesels.

Wiring sucks a$$, it probably wouldent be very cost effective? the best way to go about getting a 2.8 would be to buy a salvage liberty.

First off an 800 lb motor is way to heavy, and a VW diesel is prob way to small. I was told that the motor in my old cruiser was originally a shipboard generator diesel, don,t know if thats the truth but there must be many different diesels out there. The 304 prob weighs in at say 500 lbs, so something in that weight range would be ok. Doesn,t Isuzu make a couple of diesels for GM? Its just that gas is getting up around $4.50 a gallon here and I have no intention of stopping wheeling my CJ but there must be something, propane has been discussed but the tanks need to be outside the vehicle and I,m not sure if propane is much better than gas, especially where I live, we just had 2 weeks of 40 below with the windchill. An oil burner might not be a bad idea.

Wiring the computer to work correctly with all those sensors in a foreign vehicle would be a nightmare!

This why folks typically use mechanically injected engines, like the Cummins 4BT/early 6BT; Nissan SD33T and the GM 6.2/6.5T.
No stinking computer!

The cummins 4BT is the best choice out there for oil burners. Find them in oil bread trucks and put a NV4500 behind it.
