Ok so the other day i was out putting my CJ through its paces. I got on it and wound the 360 out to about 5000rpm. Shifted and kept goin. I looked down and noticed my temp guage was reading a little warmer than normal. I dont believe it should just up like that just cause i got on it some. I was thinking it could be timing?

A lean air fuel mixture can raise engine temps.
A lean mixture burns slower than a rich one.
What carb ? Edelbrock electric choke carbs are jetted lean.

My Jeep had a heating problem, but only on the highway. Turned out I had too much total advance in the distributor. It was at about 42 degrees, all in by 3000, which is about where it runs at 70 MPH. I backed it down to about 32 total and the problem went away.

im running a HEI. i believe i have to much advance also, what is the best way to take that out, heavier springs on the weights?
and what is the best way to check for the lean condition

you can put in an O2 meter to see how your A/F mix is and the timing you should check with a rollback gun so you can see just how much timing you have.
You can also just try richening up the carb and see if the problem goes away.

To reduce initial timing advance, rotate the dizzy clockwise.
The angle the dizzy is rotated is doubled at the crank.
A 5 deg change at the dizzy is a 10 deg change at the crank.
Changing initial timing advance also reduces total advance.

yea i know one time i set the initial timing, and checked total advance and had something in the 40s. My initial is set bout where it should be, but how can i take out the total advance?

they sell a bushing kit that goes in the mechanical advance and limits it. you can also put on an adjustable vacuum canister to be able to tune how much and how fast the vacuum advance kicks in.

I've only fiddled with non-HEI Delco dizzies.
In those, total mechanical advance is limited by a pin in an oversized ( wide ) radial slot.
The Mr. Gasket re-curve kit comes with a brass bushing to press onto the pin, which reduces total mechanical advance.
Don't know if the HEI dizzy is the same way.
Mr. Gaskets offers an HEI re-curve kit, don't know if it has a bushing or not.
If the HEI is the same, a little weld bead in the end of the radial slot would also reduce the amount of total mechanical advance.
Certainly someone else here is more knowlegable on the HEI workings.
As I understand it, the weights and springs only determine the starting rpm and "rate" that the mechanical advance comes in.
