my buddies inline 6 which is a rebuilt motor runs really great except for right now...he had to turn the idle all the way up to get it to idle and when giving it a little throttle it will rev up and slow down over and over...if you hammer or the gas it accelerates fine...just part throttle cruising or at a stand still it revs up and down considerably....we checked all the vacume lines wire connections and are at a complete stand still....any ideas on what it could be would be great...

What year is the motor? Use a can of B12 and missed the engine trying to stay away from the top of the carb (IF it has a carb).. Shoot the base of the carb and also where the intake bolts to the head... If it's a newer I6 check all of your sensors TPS, Crank or Cam positioning Sensor, O2 sensor, etc etc.. You could have an auto parts store do a diagnostic check for free... Check the air filter and flow sensor... It could be 101 things or just one simple thing... But more info is needed on the engine etc. What is it .... 4.0 or 4.2.... year of motor...etc

If he is running the computer controlled Carter BBD carb take the air cleaner off and use a can of compressed air to clean out the center holes in the fuel metering rods. You can see them by looking down the carb they are brass or bronze and stick out in the barrel of the carb and have a very small hole that plugs easily.
