Am I the "dipstick"??

so the guy i bought the jeep from broke the dipstick tube. ever tried to replace one of these?? wow!! :shock: so i guess after 2 hrs. of an oil bath from dropping the oil pan and playing in it,... I'll ask..How in the world do you press this thing in?? special tool? anyways my new tube now looks like my old tube and my blood pressure is thourgh the roof. good advice, even bad advice would be welcomed. thanks

Many of the replacement tubes need to be ground on the flared portion that presses into the block as they seemed to be a bit too large. As for the procedure to install, a 3/8" box end wrench can be slid over the tube and used as point to tap with a hammer and blunt punch. I am going to be doing a tube replacement shortly and am going to measure the old tube and compare with the new and remove any material before getting into your situation.

Mc has dipsticks & tubes here in the e-store that are pre ground. I have one in my amx and it fit great.

Replacement dipsticks dont fit...none of them will unless you got one made from 1995 and older.

So Matt, What's the story behind these things not fitting? Where you ever able to figure out who's bright idea it was to enlarge them?

A short time after the last AMC V8 was used in 1991 their was a massive dropping of OEM parts and support for these drivetrains. Chrysler dropped the ball on OEM stuff and even caused a large casting house to go under (ACME in Racine WI.) by not paying their bills. They tried to support AMC drivetrain but since they thought it would be better to do a hostile takeover and destroy original blueprints they shot themselves in the foot...which I think was justice but it hurts the people trying to keep their AMC alive and buying dealer parts that dont fit deosnt help.

If desired, there's a couple ways to "convert" to a 2 piece dipstick tube to ease exhaust manifold / header gasket replacement. One way uses a 5/16 compression fitting, the other uses pieces made from 2 dipstick tubes to make a slip joint using the enlarged portion at the top as a union sleeve.

round two goes to me and my dremel. :? of course i had to call in reinforcements, but the job got done. thanks for the help. I just wouldn't sure about sanding it down. thats kinda one of those things you can't take back once done. And i didn't want to wait another week for one more tube to shipp in....
