Well this weekend i crunched my oilpan on a little stump hiding in the tall grass. It pushed it up into my crank, i think a conn rod was hitting it. Have some shavings in the oil, hopefully the filter takes care of them. But i pulled the pan and the pickup is all mushed up too. So i was wondering what is the procedure for changing, i guess i need to pull the passenger side motor mounts in order to sping that thing in there.
Thanks

I'm thinking you may have to pull one of the main caps too (#3 ?). Never tried to take a pickup off with the engine still in the vehicle. You must have mashed it pretty good.
Time for one of these:

and if you look closely at the front of the V dent you can see two dents perpendicular in direction to the V that is where the connecting rod bolts hit.

Woah. Makes you want a oil pan skidplate doesn't it?
Patf10
yea all cause a damn beaver stump. big question now is can i get the pickup on with the engine in?
Soylent_Green
I hardly ever work on jeeps so I'm not sure. If you can get the pan off inbetween those motor mounts, you shouldn't have a prolem, I would think. You may have to unbolt the mounts and raise the motor some to get the pan back into place.
Patf10
yea the pan isnt really the problem its the pickup tube, i dont know if i could just bend the old one back, but i tihnk id rather have a new one
ironman_gq
if its a 6cyl. I think the pickup is part of the oil pump and they come out as a unit then you seperate them but I'm not sure. I know that the v8 ones are threaded into the block on one side.
Patf10
yes its a v8

Just dont worry bout destroying the old pick-up...new one can be purchased at local parts store for less than 20 bucks.......just unthread the old out and thread in the new.

anything special to putting a pickup in, any sealant or antthing specific i need to do?
AMX69PHATTY
I'd say just don't over tighten it, can make it break later at the pipe threads.
I did not use any sealant on the threads and
made sure the small plastic button was in bottom of pick-up bell
to prevent it sucking pan up against it.
How's that go for Pipe Threads, tighten till "contact", then 1-1/2 to 2-1/2 more turns ?
Confirm pick-up bell elevation and pan depth, 3/8" pan clearance max ?
Plastic button is maybe 1/4" tall.

well new pickup and pan are installed. The new pickup didnt come with a new button, and the old one wasnt reusable. But upon inspection of my pan, it has a weld bead on the bottom that would keep it from hitting the bottom. I got one o the transdapt pans with a skid on it. all seems to be working well. Except i think my throw out bearing is goin cause it makes some nast noises sometimes
