pulling a t-18 dana 20 from a 79 cj5 6 cyl & installing in my 79 cj7 304.what other parts should i grab from the donor before letting it go? if i do a cv rear shaft can i ditch the skidplate shims?i know ill have to redo shafts maybe front will work not sure.being both are 79 cjs shouldnt it be pretty much bolt in except for driveshafts? what size clutch fot the t18 out of the cj5?

If you don't swap the entire bellhousing, make sure you get the stud for the lower DS trans/bellhousing mount, and make sure you keep the throwout arm, it is notched to clear that stud.
The shims were actually to keep the trans from hitting the floorboard, since the t-18's are so much taller than the t-150. You can eliminate them with a 1" body lift. Front shaft from the T-18 will swap, you will need a new rear shaft, since the CJ7 has a longer wheelbase.
For a CV rear, you will need a new yoke on the t-case, and need to rotate the rear pinion up probably 6-8 degrees.
The factory clutch is a 10 1/2". I've had really good luck using the 11" clutch from a Wagoneer, the 304 flywheel is drilled for both.

tufcj pretty much covered everything... the biggest thing is the input shaft lenght is different...if you got everything with the tranny, the shifter is gonna come out different iirc, but heck i'm drunk right now and am probably wrong...if you got questions just post again to this thread...

i thought the input shafts would be the same as its out of a cj & not a fsj.right now i,m running a centerforce II clutch & pressure plate on my t-150 its only a year old & has maybe 1000 miles max on it.wonder if i can reuse the pressure plate & just get a new disc to fit the t18?

If the clutch is new, I wouldn't worry about it. Input shaft size is the same between the CJ T-150 and CJ T-18, so you won't need to replace anything. I would put a new throwout in there just because. You WILL need the stud and arm from the T-18 bell housing, or the entire bell housing like I mentioned above.
I just had poor life in the factory 10.5" clutch. Burned the OE one up in about 18K miles. The 11" lasted over 80K, and was still going when the input shaft seal failed and oiled it. Replaced it with another, and it has nearly 70K on it. (My CJ has 168,000 on the odometer).

i cant find any info on rear driveshaft legnth for a stock 79 cj7 304 t18a dana 20 .could this combo be had from the factory? i have a chance to dig through a pile of cj shafts but need to know what legnth to look for.

The odd thing was that the T-18 wasn't available with a V-8 in CJs, only with a I-6 from the factory. Your best bet is to probably get everything installed and bolted down, then measure. The I-6/T-18 rear shaft should be the same, since the tranny was positioned the same.
Can't help you with mine, I'm running a 360/T-18/Scout 300 into a Dana 44 rear. My CV rear shaft is 27" running length.

just trying to get a close idea & ill grab 4 or 5 from the pile maybe one will work.also looks like piolt bushings are diffrent sizes t150 is .670, t18 is .668 or is that not enough to worry about?
tufcj
I don't think .002" is enough to worry about. Probably just normal wear.
