they have good length straight out of the box and good gear ratios.. it seems that magazines have nothing bad to say about the axles? but i wonder how they compare to the popular choices?? d44's and the 9 inch. even if you only go with the front due to the smaller ring size??any body tried this?? it seems i'd be dollars ahead with toy axles..??

The Toyota rear is about equal to a 44 in axle size, but the ring gear is a little smaller. I have seen the pinions shear at the yoke under V-8 power.
The weak link in the Toyota front is the Burfield joint. I've seen several break under 4 cylinder power with 33 and 35 inch tires. There are the "Marfields", made by the folks that make the Marlin Crawler, but by the time you spend that kind of cash, you might as well build a 44 or 9 inch.
Also you'd have to buy new wheels, Toyota runs a 6 on 5.5" pattern.
I'd say leave the Toyota axles under Toyotas or something like a Samurai.
