Does anyone know anything about any of the engines on ebay. I am looking at buying one of the engines taken out of salvaged vehicles. There is a take out LS1's complete with tranny's or the 5.7 Chevy Vortec complete with tranny. They would be going in my 1999 Jeep TJ. Also currently I have a manual transmission. I would rather have an automatic and since I'd be buying a new tranmission anyways I figured I would just swap it out. Does anyone know how hard it is to do such a conversion? What is better for a Jeep when 4 wheeling, manual or automatic?

The auto/manual debate ends in personal preference. Personally, I like a manual for the feel and the fact that they will seldom fail completely, barring a completely failed clutch, you can limp one off the trail.
If you buy a LT1, be POSITIVE to get the full wiring harness and computer, and that it isn't cut when removed. Buying it later could cost more than the engine. Measure the length of the engine/trans, then check with Advance Adapters or Novak to be sure a t-case adapter is available. Check the length of the adapter and t-case to be sure it will give you enough room for a rear driveshaft. They would also have engine mounts and such. Be prepared for a LOT of fabrication, there are no "bolt in" kits.
I know a guy in Denver who did a LT1/4L60/Atlas in a CJ7 built for rock crawling. He had to move the rear axle back over a foot to get a long enough rear drive shaft to get full articulation.
Check emissions laws in your area if you plan on keeping it street licensed. Most laws say that the engine has to be the same year or newer than the body it goes in, and it has to retain ALL emissions parts to be legal.
