AMC Head Repair - weeping corner by bolt

So can an AMC head that is cracked and weeping in the corner by the lower corner bolt be "repaired" by oven heating and welding ?? :-|

Typically (And most likely you are talking a 291c) you use some epoxy or block fill but yes it can be repaired.

I had one that had been welded successfully and pressure tested. Traded it (actually a pair) to MC for a set of 090s. Needed a little less compression for the current project. I suppose those are waiting for the 4 axis mill to come in? Am I right MC? :-| Bob tufcj

Yes they are '70 291c's, a pair, and one has the "issue".
The 291c's were planned for the '73 401.
So the epoxy / block filled is applied inside the collant passage(s) ?
Not on the outside surface of the casting ?

I still wonder if it can be caused by lifting, removing, & installing
a fully assembled motor with chains attached to front of head
on the passenger side, especially whith back of engine tilted down.
Now use and engine plate on the carb studs.

glad this got braught up, i have a crack on one of my heads. thats why i ended up buying a set of edlebrock heads. so what's the best way to fix this head if it's fixable.the story on it i sent it out to the machine shop, had new valve guides and spring put in it. there 502-2 heads, the crack also goes up and on top in the area where it was milled for about a 1".

See where you're now offereing 291-C castings for sale.

The pair I have are casting number 319 6291-1.

Is there a difference between -1 & -C castings ?

or do people use the -C to indicate closed chambers ?

No difference in the -C or -I heads. I was just told that the -I heads were cast later as service replacements. I have one -C and one -I head on my AMX. Bob tufcj

the c head I think has the smaler ex valves the and the -1 head has the bigger valves

All of the -I heads should have the 1.680" exhaust valves. If you have -C heads with the 1.625" valves, they are VERY early 1970 heads. All the mid/late 70 and early 71 -C heads had the 1.680" valves. Bob tufcj

Ok, thanks :t: Read over at amcforums where someone was talking about "Spray Welding" on the coners to prevent cracking, and it can even be used to fix cracks :-|
