I was checking this board out and it looks like there is alot of knowledge here. So I signed up. 1st thing I have is this. I have a 74 CJ 5 with a 304. It is mostly stock, I did a spring over and swaped wrangler springs for the 5's. I have 35 Pit Bull rocker tires. I am about to put in a 401, hopefully soon. what kind of damage am I looking at when I take it off road? I think it will be too much power for the axles and the U joints I need to be on the lookout for axles, Ive heard of lots of swaps, any that are bulletproof for this setup? [

Nice Jeep! And thanks for what you did/are doing in Iraq. If they are side pipes I think I'm seeing in the picture, they will be very prone to damage, especially if you plan on doing big rocks. What tranny do you have? Depends on how you drive it too. I personally know somebody who managed to snap a full float Dana 60 rear axle shaft the first day the 401 was in the Jeep. Those engines make an incredible amount of torque. They also SUCK... a LOT of gas. You might wish you had kept the 304 when you start stopping at the gas station EVERY day, ha, ha.

I'm running a mild 304 and I still break stuff, I run 35" tires on D44's with 4.10's and Detroits, and axleshafts still go bu-bye! I didn't go D60's because I didn't want ot go full width. And any axle you swap in the front you will have to outboard your spring hangers, keep that in mind.

Welcome to Bulltear. Hope you enjoy the time you spend here. I admire and thank all of the brave people deployed over there. :t: :t: Your 74 will have a flanged 30 spline Dana 44 rear. That's probably the strongest stock rear axle you can get. It will hold up to 35s as long as you don't get too stupid on the skinny pedal. The Dana 30 front is another story. I broke carriers, axles, u-joints and hubs with 35s. I ended up building a Dana 44 for the front. Tranny/t-case will play a part, because the lower the gearing, the greater the torque multiplies. I'm running a t-18 (6.32:1) 1st gear, and a Scout Dana 300 (2.62:1) thru 4.27 geared axles for about a 70:1 low. My 360 makes plenty of torque thru that gearing to sit at idle and spin all 4 tires if it can't find traction. I have a 401 sitting on a stand, but the 360 works so good with my driving style, I can't justify swapping it out. Bob tufcj

Personally, i would go full width axles. The COG on a sprung over CJ5 with narrow track axles is going to be a nightmare on off-camber situations. I would be looking for either a set of Chevy 1 tons (or even a 60/44 combo), Dodge, or look at J10s and Waggys. Your jeep is sharp looking....it just needs some bigger axles to keep the the shiny side up and round out it's potential.

You guys seem to have answered all questions asked, even from your selves. I do have the Dana 44 in the rear and the 30 up front. I will be doing a disc brake conversion as soon as the new engine is in. My trany is a T 15 I beleive. But I may be changing that out for a 4 speed. I just need to find out if it will mate to my dana 20 T case also use this as a DD so I have crazy laws to deal with, as far as how much the tires can stick out past the fenders!! I have been looking at Waggy axles they are every where it seems. I ve been on the lookout for some rockwells but the ones I did find were to much moola.

Yeah, I hear you about the tire stickout thing. That's our biggest problem keeping ours inspected and street legal here in PA. Don't know where you call home, but the competition cut on your rear fenders might be a bigger problem than tire stickout as far as street legal. They'd probably want you to have mudflaps or something.

Nice jeep! I was in Moab several years ago when Pit-Bull tires where just a rumor and climbed Moab rim with a guy from our local area testing a set. They worked great on the rocks and reminded me of lucky charms cereal with purple horse shoes and blue diamonds on the tread :?: Thank you for your service over there and try to stay cool! As far as waggy axles go if it was me I would be looking for a dually dana 60 or 70 (64" wide) and a dana 44 from a waggy or a 60 from a dodge (Dodge dana 60's arent as wide). Dana 44's arent a whole hell of alot of an upgrade but if you ask Bob he cant seem to get enought borrowed time on his =D> :wink: :lo1l:

I'll upgrade that rear 44 when she breaks. Until then, I'll continue to abuse it with my 37s (and carry a spare set of shafts :mrgreen: :mrgreen: ). Bob tufcj

Trying to get the heck outta this hot humid place!!!!! Not sure when the thermometer reads 95 if it's the temp or the humidity!!!!

Actually, finishing off a 6 month install on a Navy Crusier. I need to get home, wife's sick - she caught Lyme disease last week (flip-flops in a heavily wooded yard), the kids are busy working, my yard is a shambles and my Jeep still isn't ready to run on it's own power yet :smile:

She goes in for an MRI and ultra sound tomorrow (8/2) to see if she has liver and gall bladder damage. For such a small pest, this fawker bit her good. I've been doing some research ... more on Lyme Disease: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lyme_disease

Well I just hope they caught it fast enough. I've been bitten by ticks before but not a Deer tick & I really never read up on it before, I've heard of the symptoms but man, it could be bad. I cut & pasted some info off the site U posted & just from one little bite and this could happen. Let us know Pat.
