I would like to machine a GM HEI distributor for use in my Jeep(s). Anyone done this conversion that might have a write-up or a link?

Sure! Lots have installed the premade unit for AMC. If you want to make the piece you will need a lathe of course to cut down the neck on the Chevy piece and make up a new one. Stems are 1.059 +.0005 -.0015 for the fit into the timing cover. Otherwise you can buy these new off ebay for the AMC V8.

Thanks. I really don't want to buy one since I've got a bunch of extra HEI just collecting dust right now. It looks to me like if I machine down the end of the GM unit to basically flush, then slip a collar and AMC drive gear on I should be good to go, yes?

You'll also need to shorten the shaft and re-cut the flat for the oil pump drive. The shaft on the GM unit is longer.
