ok I've got the flywheel from my 304... can I use it on the 360? or do I need to order up a new flywheel for the 360? the new flywheel runs about $140.. just hate to spend money when i dont need to..

Each displacement uses a unique flywheel since AMC engines are externally balanced. You really should have a 360 balanced flywheel on a 360.
If you have the 360 flexplate, you can take that and the 304 flywheel to a machine shop and have the flywheel "match balanced" to the flexplate.
That said, I did run a 304 flywheel on a very low RPM 360 without a problem. I tried running a 360 flywheel on a 304 and had some SERIOUS vibration problems. It's worth the money to use the right flywheel and not have to rip it apart and do it again if it vibrates.

AMC listed the 304/360 flywheel as the same part after 1980 and they also used the same harmonic balancers after 1980. The only difference was the piston weight and the rods and crank were always the same. Depending if you have a late 80-81 304 you can use a 360 flywheel. It is also possible to use a 360 harmonic balancer and a 304 flywheel.

yes I do have the flexplate from that motor.. guess I'll be going to a machine shop..

Just by looking at it, are there markings to distinguish between the 304 and 360 flywheel? It occurs to me I forgot to mark which was which in my garage pile.

went to butler & Mac Master in hoolowell today.. should get a call either tomorrow or thursday to go pick it up.. I think the flywheel only has a casting/stamp on the back side I can look at my 304 flywheel and tell you what it says when i get mine back. I know the 360 flywheels (earlier versions) had a 1inch counterweight on the outer edge.. I can take a few pics of my 304 flywheel when I get it back..

paintedrat: the flywheel I had had a tag on the backside of the flywheel (facing the engine) read "J304" apparently that's a casting code.. for the 304.. which that flywheel came off of..
ohh and the flywheel looked awesome.. they fully balanced it, and hot tanked the flywheel and flexplate I gave them.. and machined the flywheel surface, and got rid of all the cracks it had.. $130.. not too shabby.
