The t-18a has the reverse position to the right/down on the shift lever. The t-18 has reverse right/up. If the top cover is off, the t-18a has an aluminum reverse shift fork hanging from the cover, the T-18 reverse fork hangs from a pin inside the case. The cases are also shaped slightly different due to the shift forks.
If it's a factory CJ T-18, then it should be the T-18a, but it's a very popular swap in.

CJ's also came factory with T-18B? Well thats atleast what mine is and its a factory CJ transmission with the not quite as low granny gear and reverse to the right and up.

The T-18B is a rare bird. They were a rarely ordered option on late 60s and early 70s CJs that had the GM 225 V-6. They only had a 4:1 1st instead of the 6.32:1. I had one several years ago, but couldn't get the right adapter, since it has a slightly longer input shaft.

So what on earth do i have then???it came from a 76' cj-7 i bought that was mated to a 304. All i know is i have a short input w/o adapter, a dana 20 t-case and reverseto the right and up. So this would mean its an earlier T-18 since i serioulsy think mine has the 4.02 granny gear.

pics would help out alot.

T-18s that were factory installed in CJs in 76 and 77 had a 1st gear ratio of 4.02. Cherrokes and trucks had a 6.32 ratio in those years. Reverse is right and up. I've had two CJs that came from the factory with these. You can tell if is a factory install by the third digit in the VIN code M= 4 speed, F=3 speed. I Don't know about the first gear ratio in 78, but I also have two 79 factory CJ T-18s and thier first gear ratio is 6.32. Reverse on these is to the right and down.

Ok....mine came in a project jeep so im not too sure of the year but reverse is to the right and up and its deff has to be the 4.02 granny geared one.

I have a Jeep T18-1b and it's the GRANNY TRANNY (6.32:1)... It came out of a J-series Pick-up and it was in my CJ-7..
This tranny has the long input shaft with the 5" adapter in-between the bellhousing and tranny... with a 1" adapter on the backside for the Dana 20 T-Case... My reverse is Right and Up (Next to 3rd gear).
You never know what you're getting with these T18's... The T19's and T98's had similar issues... Sometimes you might find different internals in the T18... from one of these other trannies... You just gotta check the first gear ratio... I've seen regular stamped T18's with the GRANNY TRANNY... along with the T18a's and T18b's.... But I've seen more T18's with the 4:1 1st gear.... You'll know if you have the granny tranny when you touch the gas and you have to shift 5' into the 4-way :?
