luxi401 I am presently rebuilding my TH400, last rebuild by me was 10 years ago (with a roller clutch to HD sprag clutch conversion) I had a slipping 3rd gear shift when applying 401 power. I will install the Transgo shift kit that doubles holding power in 3rd gear with the special spacer plate so I think this problem will be fixed. Upon disassembly, I found the trans looking like new, clutches and bands all look the same like when I installed them 10 years ago, even the direct clutches! No sludge buildup in the pan, trans fluid glowing red and clear. But to my surprise, the forward clutches all have black burning traces on them (about 50% of the surface). What could be the cause? Seals and rings look OK. I felt some slipping only when accelerating in 3rd gear, but perhaps the low weight of my cj7 made it harder to feel the slip in 2nd gear? Any advise would be greatly appreciated.
mrtazwrench look for gs mike, he may have his rebuild vedio here in the venders section, more likely to find his info on the fourm at www.ifsja.org :t:
