machine shop says the 401 crank needs turning, local napa store is trying to convince me I need a new one
he starts going through his books, I already knew he couldnt get one, but didnt say anything
after searching, he says well I guess we will have to turn the crank, this is what I am thinking the whole time
he says looks like your going to need atleast 20 over, I am a little wary of this
the motor never had bearings or anything, it was completely stock, with stock bearings
I am a little wary about going 20 over on the crank
should I be?

I'd take it to a performance shop machinist. Have him mike the journals and go from there. If it hasn't spun a bearing, and has no scratches, it should clean up at .010", maybe just a polish. The journals may also be slightly out of round, cutting the crank makes them perfectly round again.
Remember that a .010 cut only removes .005 from the surface. That isn't much.
Definitely go the bare minimum possible. It may give it another life down the road.

for reference a sheet of notebook paper is .003-.005 thick

.020 really isnt much. We have cranks welded up to go .040 after they have had a couple of bearing spun. Take that crankshaft somewhere else and get it done right.

Had my crank done by CarQuest. it was cheaper than the local engine shops and much quicker.
