So my engine is having REALLY serious problems... HELP!

either hayes or chilton make great manuals. the dots will line up if you bring #1 to TDC but if the chain is really loose or has only skipped one link they may look like they line up when they are really several degrees off. I think you should see 21 pins between the marks but I cant be sure without my manual. The compression check won't tell you if your timing has jumped because it only tests if the cylinders are sealing. If the valves aren't moving at the right times you will still have compression but it might not start. When mine went I did lose compression because my timing was exactly opposite of where it should have been. Hope you can understand this :t: .

Well I ended up cleaning the oil pressure relief valve with brake cleaner and turned the distributor to the left about half an inch and it fired up, managed to get it running somewhat decent by adjusting the timing by ear but the way the timing is set now is a good bit off where it has been set previously for the past few months. At least it is drivable again! :? It also now seems to be leaking from the rear main a bit badly, but not enough to keep me from driving it. Also oil pressure is lower than it usually is. Now it is staying at a constant 15 but drops to 0 when idling, so I have to keep my foot on the gas to keep the oil pressure up at lights or the lifters start clattering :shock:

sounds like jumped timing if you had to move the dizzy that much to get it to start. I would definately be looking to pull the timing cover and inspect the timing set and oil pump. while you have it off its not a lot more work to replace the rear main. I would recommend the hayes as thats the manual I use. Bad oil pressure could be a stuck pressure relief valve or badly worn pump or bearings. Bad bearings could let the crank wander enough to make the seal leak but leaking rear mains are very common on jeeps. :(: They're like a good dog and have to mark their territory.

Haha yeah I have and topped it off, about 1/4 quart low after driving it about 50 miles today... looks like I will be topping it off on a daily basis now.

I am planning a full rebuild sometime in the future so I will wait to tear it apart then. I am going off to basic and AIT training this summer (Army National Guard) then will rebuild it afterwards when I get my $20,000 bonus and start college because by then I will need a very reliable vehicle. Hopefully it will last like this until then if I drive it real easy. I am currently a senior in high school and have no money to do what I want with it right now.

its gonna be tough to make her last that long as a daily driver though you may get lucky with it. :t: if you got a manual all that oil coming out the back of the engine could soak your clutch and make driving a bitch so you may want to watch that.

Could it be maybe bad crank thrust surface causing excessive crank end play and also shifting cam forward and making lifters hit cam journals and no travel ? That is to go along with rear main seal leakage.

It seems that the no oil pressure at idle as remedied itself. *crosses fingers*

I umm hate to rain on your parade.. but Engnes as a rule don't "Heal themselves" my guess is something is wrong internally and you were lucky that it shot craps on the driveway.. next time you might be 75 miles away.. Or it will will break and ruin the block or crank.. Just my 2 cents worth.. good luck.

your no pressure at idle was probably a stuck bypass plunger. sometimes they hang up in their bores and you lose oil pressure I would pull it out and clean it really well/ check for burrs that might cause it to stick.
