FOR AN OFF ROAD JEEP THAT WILL NOT SEE A LOT OF ROAD DRIVING WHAT IS THE DISADVANTAGE OF RUNNING A SPOOL COMPARED TO A DETROIT LOCKER. OBVIOUSLY THE SPOOL HAS ZERO SLIPPAGE, BUT SINCE THEY COST LESS THAN A DETROIT WHY WOULD I NEED ANY DIFFERENTIAL ACTION ON AN OFF ROAD ONLY UNIT?

I have friends who run both and the Detroit guys learn about the handling quirks, especially on snowy and icy roads and so do the guys who run spools. Your not suppossed to run a spool on the street yet the couple of guys that I know do and find them very predictable. The only prob they ever mention is the tire chirping when doing turns on pavement. Depending on your driving style, size of motor, type of trans and drivetrain it can be hard on axles, etc

I've driven a full-size around with a Detroit, and I found it very easy to learn. When turning and such at instersections, if I coast, it wouldn't lock up. If I gas it, instant tire chirping.
For a spool in the rear, if you think you may be doing a fair amount of pavement, consider a rear full floater kit with lockout hubs. Drive around in one wheel drive like all the other vehicles on the road. (Edit: I didn't realize this wouldn't work until reading below.)
I'm putting a spool in my CJ this summer, because the new rear already has one. I've never driven with one, and drive to local trails. That should be interesting.

Joe, The only disadvantage to a spool off road, in the rear axle is you will find the jeep wont turn as well.. in anything slippery the rear axle will tend to overpower the steering ability of the front axle.(not really a big deal unless you are on tight mountain trails.. there it adds the pucker factor) and it will scare the crap out of you in the snow.. other than that.. no biggie.. I used to run spools years ago (Ok I welded the spiders) but I use a locker now.. just a little less extreme.

It dose not work to drive with one wheel locked I tried it push and when you let up it pulles.

lots of auto lockers have the same problem. when you mash the gas they want to go one way and when you let up they go the other way. When i first put the lockers in my jeep i had a little ply in the steering (bad tie rod ends) almost put her in the trees a couple of times.
