He doesn't list precisely what was done but I'm just wondering if you were to do it yourself what it would cost.

You could have that much into it. He is selling just a forged piston 401 motor rebuilt with a air gap and not much more. I think it may be worth the money, especially if you dont have a good core 401

I'm actually looking for a 401 because even though my 360 still runs strong I think its days are numbered. Do you think it would be a good offroad motor, I would be dropping it in my buggy. Basically my requirements are simple. It has to be AMC :lo1l: , good to 6000rpm, smooth offroad type power, reliable.

I would lean towards a swinging pickup and a #534 plate other than that it seems like it ouwld be a great engine for your buggy. Sure you can handle the power? :wink:

Hehe, I welcome the power! It's funny you mention the #534 plate because I don't know for sure if that 8 quart Milodon would fit. Or if it did fit it looks like it would be a magnet for rocks and such. If I got this

I would be able to run a stock pan correct? Also, explain swinging pickup to me and do you need one if you run the #534 kit? Sorry for all the questions, engine performance knowledge is my weak spot which is why I signed up here :t:

I wrote D&J machine about exact specs and here is what they wrote back. In the 401 AMC engine we use Speed Pro Forged pistons with Perfect Cicle or Hasting rings. Block gets sonic tested before boring. ACL or Clevite bearings. Comp cam 10-216-5. Advertised duration is 274 Int. and 286 ex. Duration @ .050" is 230 Int. and 236 ex. .520" Int. and .523" ex. valve lift. This cam gives the 401 a Very Strong mid range and good torque and a Great throttle response. Heads are built with All new 2.02" Int. and 1.680" ex. valves. Three angle valve job, All new guides. Heads have screw in rocker studs so they can't pull out. 1.440" high performance springs to match cam. We use a Full 1.6 ratio rockers. The block as you can see from the pictures has the oil modifications done. Timing cover is New along with oil pump and gears. Timing set is a double row set. Victor gasket with Mr Gasket or thick Intake gasket. What do you think?

I think the camshaft is wrong for your application other than that sounds like a good motor.
